Camp Waubanong
The Director
Camp Waubanoug is proud to introduce Shannon Heslop as our new director for 2008. Shan comes to us from Kindle Farm High School in Saxtons River, Vermont, and before that she was at The Mayhew Program, a camp in Bristol, New Hampshire. A graduate of Penn State University, she is already putting her camp and outdoors background to work to make 2008 one of our best camp years yet.
The Assistant Director
As the Assistant Director for 2008, Jake Subin will bring a great deal to the table. Jake has had many different roles at camp over the past five years, including Leadership Training Counselor, Assistant Director and all around "Camp Guru". Before coming to camp Jake worked with children for eight years in a variety of settings including, public and private schools, day care and summer camps. He is currently pursuing a degree in Sound Engineering at the University of Hartford and has also done extensive studies in child psychology and development. Jake hopes that together with Shan, they will be able to preserve old traditions while pushing camp in a progressive direction that will bring new ideas to Waubanong.
The Staff
Each year many staff return to Camp Waubanong because it offers such a unique and fun community. Some staff were even former campers! The Director interviews and hires only the most qualified applicants who have demonstrated an ability to make safe decisions, develop creative activities, and work collaboratively. Every year all staff attend a week-long training just prior to the beginning of camp to learn about child development, risk management, activity planning, and group development. All staff who work directly with the campers have CPR training as well.
